Wintertime in Kalmar

Hejsan,

This week, the first snow of the winter finally arrived Kalmar. Due to the high latitude of this city, winter times are dark, even now we just have daylight from around 8.30am to 4pm. So snow and ice really light up the day and reflect the city lights during night. It is the perfect time to go skating or ice fishing on lakes. Lakes formed a nice layer of ice and it feels like you “walk on a frozen fish tank” (Svensson A).

Even the Baltic Sea in Kårehamn, our sampling side on Öland, is frozen in the harbor and 100 meter out and all boats are on shore. No sampling possible at the moment…

In the Kalmarsund-laboratory, it was time to empty the fridge and freezing rooms. Right now we have an ice-cream car standing in the back yard containing loads of frozen samples until all rooms are cleaned and ready to use again. The entire house is smelling just enough fish to know which kind of samples were forgotten…

Cool greetings
