Dinoflagellates can use bacteria as a vitamin source

My name is Elisabeth and I am filling in for Caroline this year. I have read an article about dinoflagellates and how they can use bacteria as a vitamin source, that I want to share with you.

Phytoplankton is a group of organisms that needs different types of resources to thrive and grow. Previous research has shown that vitamins can be a crucial resource for the phytoplankton, for instance B vitamins. In a recently published article, the focus was on three types of B vitamin, B1, B7 and B12, which are all important in different processes in the cell. Many phytoplankton cannot produce B vitamins by themselves, instead they depend on the surrounding organisms and environment. In this article, the researchers were investigating the dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedrum, which is a phytoplankton that cause massive blooms, red tides. Many dinoflagellates are mixotrophs, which means that they can use different types of strategies to obtain important B vitamins from the surrounding environment. Results showed that vitamin B1 and B12 are required by the dinoflagellate for growth and that they can use bacteria as a source for these vitamins. These findings can be valuable when understanding how algae blooms are affected by vitamins and the ecology of the dinoflagellate.
